I was a child of wondering mind,
I loved the tales of old
When stars came out in darkness blind,
my mother I’d enfold
“Oh mother dear please tell me now
the legends of the night--
And she would whisper soft and low
in moon’s pale shimm’ring light
Some say he’s from the forest dark
Some say from hidden caves
And some point to the highest mount,
Or to the river waves.
He comes in winter’s waning light
With moonlight in the air
He roams his kingdom in the night
He seeks a lady fair
The Forest Lord is man and stag,
Great horns upon his crown
He brings great wisdom to the lass
Wearing berry-red silk gown.
He comes to her in pale moonlight
And finds her in the pines
He circles round, the flame ignites
And love’s red fire he winds
Some say he’s from the forest dark
Some say from hidden caves
And some say from the highest mount,
Or from the river waves.
He comes in autumn’s waning light
With moonlight in the air
He roams his kingdom in the night
He seeks his lady fair
And I will seek his wisdom now
I long to hold him near
And hope one solstice night he’ll come
In winter cold and clear |
