SCHEMATA for "We Seek the Spark"

REFRAIN (all singers)
We seek the spark
within the heart
of deepest dark

refrain x 4, in a round

SECTION 1 (Crystal)
Infinities of stars before us
like scattered grains of sand
endless as an ancient forest
so much for us to understand

refrain x 4

Of all the children yet to be
and all who came before
this moment is for us to see
a choice, a chance, an open door

refrain x 4

instrumental section with flute and organ. electric guitar solos over top

SECTION 2 (Brad)

Let us find illumination
Light the inner fire
each breath becomes an exaltation
burning wth desire
(voice 2)
burning wth desire
(voice 3)
burning wth desire
(voice 4)

refrain x 4, interspersed with alternating drum solos

On this night of deepest darkness
pull back the cloak of night
'time has come, a new life harkens
bringing in the light

bringing in the light
(voice 4)

ah, ah (all singers)
Kingdoms crumble all around us

As the ivory towers fall

Let the light of love surround us all.
(both)

Notes
• The song has a slow part (Section One) and a fast part (Section Two). The violin string section you hear in the first sectin is the melody line for the voice in Section One. In Section Two, the flute and oboe represent the vocal melodic line.

• The music provided here on the mp3 above is a good starter but will require adapting the melody a bit. Example: the amount of syllables in the first verse fit well into the melody line on the first stanza, but not so much for the second one in Section One. Same for Section Two, the syllables fit well for the first verse but not as well for the second. Vocalists, I can work with this with you on the phone (336-634-0108).

• In Section One each line of the lyrics is drawn out and slow, taking up four measures each. In Section Two each line is only one measure each. Note: we might decide to let each line breathe more and last for two measures each in the second section.

• The refrain is in 5/4 time, and switches immediately back to 4/4. Everything is in 4/4 except the refrains.

• This song is meant to be very energetic, grandiose and powerful. It will end the first part of the show—the intermission will follow— so it will be a mini "concert-closer".The instrumental section in the second part will likely be extended a great deal, both to feature solos by flute, organ and electric slide guitar, and to segue into the bagpipe section.

Bagpipes and tuning
The tune is in "A". Bagpipes can play in "A" Mixolydian.
Somewhere back in history, about 500 years ago, the Vatican decided to standardize all western music. The bagpipers never got the memo and consequently a bagipe tunes a semitone and a half too high. Therefore an "A" to a bagpipe is is actually a note directly between a "B" and a "B flat". Solution— Maybe the pipes can tune a bit sharp (for them) and we'll play the tune in "B". Maybe we'll let the pipes solo over just drums (like most pipe bands).
